Anonymous asked: I do agree with a lot said about EYK (like Hyuna the Stripper) but I think some points are a bit nitpicky. In one post you linked to it talked about the use of the word ghetto which, while it has negative origins, is used frequently and isn't particularly offensive, in my experience. While it may not be the best thing to say, I don't think it's fair to rag on them about that in particular. Also, not sure why, but based on their analyses I just get the feeling that they aren't that intelligent...
Look, you can like EYK if you want. No one is stopping you. But POC have repeatedly made the point that ghetto has classist and racist connotations that they find offensive. If you don’t find them offensive, fine. But respect the fact that other people do, and have valid reasons for that.
“Ghetto” historically did refer to sections where Jewish people were forced to live, but it has entered the modern vernacular as a word used to describe urban areas that are low-income and predominately black. From there, ghetto now is used as an adjective to replace words like cheap, crappy, etc. The link of anti-black sentiment is there.
And if you don’t think those analyses were particularly intelligent, perhaps you shouldn’t follow this blog since a majority of those posts were written by two of our admins on their personal blogs.
