Terms you should know
Feminism-
The advocacy of women’s rights on the grounds of political, social, and economic equality to men.
Sexism-
“Sexism is both discrimination based on gender and the attitudes, stereotypes, and the cultural elements that promote this discrimination. Given the historical and continued imbalance of power, where men as a class are privileged over women as a class, an important, but often overlooked, part of the term is that sexism is prejudice plus power. Thus feminists reject the notion that women can be sexist towards men because women lack the institutional power that men have.” (x)
Sex vs Gender-
Sex refers to the biological and physiological characteristics that define men and women.
Gender refers to the socially constructed roles, behaviors, activities, and attributes that a given society considers appropriate for men and women. Gender is constructed through individual gender identity and gender role being expressed.
So with that sex =/= gender
Misogyny-
The hatred of women perpetuated and caused by patriarchal social structures. It is a prejudice attitude towards women. This hatred can manifest itself in many ways, whether it is the hatred of women that don’t fall into or follow a specific stereotypes, violence against women, objectifing women or holding a prejudice against women.
Social Constructs-
Ideas, categories, perceptions, and mechanisms societies create to define or justify certain behaviors of either society as a whole or specific groups within that society.
PoC-
Person Of Color; A term used to describe all people who are not white.
Cultural Appropriation-
Cultural appropriation is the taking on elements of other cultures and removing these elements from their original cultural context and assigning different meanings and significance to them… that is to say you twist a cultural aspect that does not belong to you into your own.
White Privilege-
White privileges are the social advantages that white people have at the expense of people of color; white people have economic, social, and cultural advantages that they see are as the norm that everyone experiences… but it is actually an advantage position that is maintain at the expense of people of color.
Male Privilege-
Male privileges are the social advantages that men have at the expense of women; men have socio-economic advantages that they see are as the norm that everyone experiences but it is actually an advantage position that is maintain at the expense of women.
Ableism-
Discrimination and social prejudice against people with disabilities.
Prejudice-
“An irrational feeling of dislike for a person or group of persons, usually based on stereotype.” (x)
Racism-
“Describes patterns of discrimination that are institutionalized as “normal” throughout an entire culture. It’s based on an ideological belief that one “race” is somehow better than another “race”. It’s not one person discriminating at this point, but a whole population operating in a social structure that actually makes it difficult for a person not to discriminate.” (x)
